This composition gives an unusually uniform mixture of colloidal carbon and colloidal alumina. By using a pre-formed colloidal dispersion of carbon, much better homogeneity is obtained than when aggregated carbon black powders are employed. Also, in order to prevent flocculation of the colloidal alumina, a carbon dispersion made with a surface-active agent compatible with "Baymal" is preferred, though not essential.
First, 416 ml of water is placed in a one-quart high-speed blender, 18.5 g of "Baymal" powder is added, and stirring at high speed continued for three minutes. Separately, 63.5 g of Aquablak K (a 30% by weight dispersion of colloidal carbon particles in water, is diluted with 63.5 g of water to reduce the viscosity, and this is added to the colloidal alumina sol in the blender while mixing at low speed (high speed mixing creates much foam).
Wetting and antifoaming agents may be added as necessary.
The final mixture "A" is a viscous, thixotropic, black ink-like paint.
